Lead by Example

Sometimes it’s hard to lead; people look to you for guidance and congratulate you on successes, but they also turn to you and question why things went wrong and expect you to handle the criticism. Every leader, no matter their business or industry, will tell you that they have made a ton of mistakes, but it’s those mistakes that allow us to learn and become better.

In the construction world, being a leader means staying on top of industry trends and staying connected to other business leaders, regardless of whether or not they’re in the same field; knowledge and information on how other people lead and work is highly valuable.

At rcs, we take full advantage of our construction association memberships and are active members in the construction community, helping us stay connected to clients and trades we work with, which in turn, allows us to stay abreast of industry news and opportunities. We host ‘Lunch and Learn’ programs to teach fellow colleagues some of the tips and tricks we have discovered along our journey that make our jobs a little bit easier. Our employees are also offered various opportunities throughout the year for professional development in their respective fields whether it be through attending classes, enrolling in programs, or going to events and conferences.

Another incredibly important part of being a leader is giving back to your community. We have been involved in many charitable initiatives and supported numerous organizations over the years and will continue to do so as long as we are able.

Being a leader isn’t just about giving direction on what work to do. It’s about supporting your staff, clients and friends whenever they need it, giving back to the people who have helped you out along the way and being a strong example for others who can look at you and say “that’s the kind of person I want to be”.  As a company, being a leader means finding, following and setting industry trends, finding new and innovative ways to approach an old topic and striving to be the best, while also being aware of your mistakes and making every effort possible to resolve them. As much as we don’t want to hear it, being a leader – both as a company and as a person – also means admitting defeat and cutting your losses before you get in too deep.

We are firm believers in leading by example and strive to do our best every day, whether that be making a decision on behalf of a client, giving back to the community, striving for a high safety rating or making decisions about growth, we feel that by doing our best, making the right decision comes naturally.

I know I say this all the time, but I’m incredibly proud of my staff and what we have built together. I know that if we continue along the path we are on rcs will only get bigger and better.
